Canadians and Their Pasts

Canadians and Their Pasts is an alliance that brings together university researchers and members of community organizations, particularly museums with an interest in all things historical, and history’s place and importance in people’s everyday lives. The alliance’s goal is to develop a better understanding of the modes of interaction that link Canadians with their past, as well as their level of historical consciousness. Formed in 2005, the alliance has completed a pan-Canadian survey of the relationships that Canadians construct of their past. It is conducting eleven other projects concerning different aspects of the relations linking Canadians with the past. The alliance organizes colloquia, holds workshops, and publishes documents related to the goals of its scientific mandate, through both applied and theoretical research. Its activities are centred around history education and dissemination, as well as customs and the transmission of history through the generations.
