Since 1992 the mission of the IUFM (Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maîtres) Nord Pas de Calais has been to provide initial teacher training (elementary and secondary), including preparing applicants for competitions for teaching positions and providing professional training for new teachers. The training is both theoretical as well as practical and done within a framework alternating between general professional training and teacher education, with teachers in training responsible for a certain number of hours of classroom teaching all year long. Research on teacher training and education was developed within IUFM. Maintaining its approach to teacher education, in 2008 the IUFM became part of the Université d’Artois.
