Lieutenant-Governor Named Honorary Patron of Heritage Fairs in New Brunswick
FREDERICTON (CNB) - Lt.-Gov. Graydon Nicholas has been named honorary patron for heritage fairs in New Brunswick, Wellness, Culture and Sport Minister Hédard Albert announced today.
"I am enthused to visit schools, students and teachers in the name of New Brunswick's heritage fairs," said Nicholas. "Young people in our province have been leaders in Canada in their participation in heritage fairs. I am delighted to be able to see their projects first-hand, hear their stories and learn from them about the customs, traditions and cultures of New Brunswick."
As honorary patron, Nicholas will be the presiding dignitary at all 15 regional heritage fairs taking place this April and May.
"I am pleased to celebrate New Brunswick's heritage fairs once again this year," said Albert. "It is interesting to see how students develop innovative ways to interpret our shared heritage. Young people need to be able to discover their past for themselves - on their own terms - and that is why it is important to create opportunities for heritage awareness through project-based learning. I extend my best wishes to every participant."
Organized at the provincial and district level by elementary, middle and high schools, the regional heritage fairs provide an innovative learning opportunity for social studies students wishing to study their provincial and national history. Fifteen students will be selected to attend the provincial showcase taking place at the Village Historique Acadien June 25-27.
New Brunswick's Heritage Fair Program is a provincial initiative of the Heritage Branch of the Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport. Support is also provided from the Department of Education, New Brunswick Museum, Department of Intergovernmental Affairs, New Brunswick Advisory Council on the Status of Women, Council of Archives New Brunswick, provincial Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages, New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, New Brunswick Labour History Project, New Brunswick Provincial Capital Commission, and Aboriginal Affairs Secretariat. National support is also provided by the McCain Foundation and Canada's National Historical Society.
