Alan Sears enseigne la pédagogie des sciences humaines à la University of New Brunswick. Il a enseigné l’histoire et les sciences humaines pendant plus de 30 ans, du niveau primaire aux études supérieures. Les recherches et publications du professeur Sears touchent les domaines des sciences humaines, de l’éducation à la citoyenneté et de la pédagogie de l’histoire. Il a publié plus de 50 articles et chapitres en plus d’avoir collaboré à la rédaction et à l’édition de nombre de livres : Education, Politics and Religion: Reconciling the Civic and the Sacred in Education (Routledge, 2010), Globalization, the Nation-State and the Citizen: Dilemmas and Directions for Civics and Citizenship Education (Routledge, 2010), et Challenges and Prospects for Canadian Social Studies (Pacific Educational Press, 2004). Il est également rédacteur en chef adjoint pour la revue scientifique en ligne Citizenship Teaching and Learning.

La plus récente recherche du professeur Sears portait sur la manière dont les enfants et les jeunes adultes saisissent les concepts de la citoyenneté. Il est présentement le chercheur principal d’un projet subventionné par le CRSH dont le but est de représenter la manière dont les jeunes de l’Alberta et des provinces Maritimes conceptualisent la participation démocratique. Il est également cochercheur dans un projet semblable qui examine comment les jeunes et les enseignants conceptualisent la diversité au Canada.
